Origins
Apparently found pre-medievally in the works of Polemius Silvius. The Late and Medieval Latin terms might have been used to describe another animal than that described by later attestations; if so, New Latin mūs montānus might well be a Latinization of a Gallo-Romance form, see Old French marmotte. 16th century alternative forms of French French marmotte (marmontaine et marmotaine murmontaine) are learned folk etymologies based on Latinized mūs montānus.
