Foenicularius Campus

τὸ Μαραθῶνος πέδιον

Foenicularius Campus (τὸ Μαραθῶνος πέδιον), a large plain in the neighbourhood of Tarraco, in Spain, so called from the quantity of fennel (μάραθρον, Dor. and Att. μάραθον, Lat. foeniculum) which grew there. The plain was traversed by the great Roman road from the Pyrenees to Tarraco. (Strab. iii. p.160; Cic. Att. 12.8)
