Ecron

Ἀκκάρων

Ecron (Ἀκκάρων), one of the 5 cities of the Philistines (1 Sam. 5.10, 11, 6.17)t in the northern border of Judah (Josh. 15.11.); but assigned to the children of Dan (19.43.), and accordingly ascribed to that tribe in Eusebius (Onomast. s. v.), where St. Jerome adds ut ego arbitror in tribu Juda. They place it between Azotus and Jamnia to the east;. and St. Jerome mentions that it was sometimes supposed to be identical with Strato's Tower, afterwards Caesareia--a manifest and inexplicable error. Its site is preserved by the modern village of Akir, SSW. of Ramleh in the great plain. (Robinson, Bib. Res. vol. iii. pp. 22--24.
