Aualites Sinus

Αὐαλίτης κόλπος

Aualites Sinus (Αὐαλίτης κόλπος, Steph. B. sub voce Ἀβαλίτης in some manuscripts of Ptolemy, 4.7. § § 27, 39; Plin. Nat. 6.29. s. 34; Arrian. Perip. Mar. Eryth. p. 6: Eth. Αὐαλίτης), the modern Zeyla, in Abyssinia, was a deep bay on the eastern coast of Africa, in lat. 11° N., SW. of the Straits of Bab-el-Man-deb. At the head of the bay was a town Avalites; and the inhabitants of the immediate district were called Avalitae. They were dependent upon the kingdom of Axum.
