Lycoris

was the name under which C. Cornelius Gallus celebrated in his poems his mistress Cytheris. The syllabic quantity of the fictitious name is the same as that of the true one, according to the rule inferred from Apuleius. (De Magia Or. vol. ii. p. 12, ed. Bipont; see Acron. ad Hor. Sat. 1.2, 64; and Bentley's note, Carm. 2.12.) [CYTHERIS. GALLUS.]
