Ludi volcanalici

Ludi volcanalici The coins of 20 B.C., stamped Mars Ultor and Volkanus ultor (Eckhel, 6.96), would seem to point to these games being established after the recovery of the standards from the Parthians; but the Fasti of the Augustan age do not mention them. These games were abolished by Macrinus, but soon renewed, owing to a religious feeling among the people that they ought to be restored, which was confirmed by the burning of the amphitheatre (D. C. 78.25). They were celebrated in the temple of Vulcan outside the city (Plut. Quaest. Rom. 47=p. 276) on the 23rd of August (C. I. L. 1.400).
