Arculum
Arculum a kind of porter's knot or pad for carrying burdens, for which the usual Latin word is CESTICILLUS The latter word seems to have been appropriated to secular, arculum to sacred uses (P. Diac. s. vv. pp. 14, 35, Müll.).
The illustration is from a terra-cotta figure discovered by Mr. Newton at Halicarnassus, and now in the British Museum. It represents a Canephoros carrying a sacred vessel on her head by the aid of a pad, which must have. corresponded to the Roman arculum.
