Origins
A latinized form of Borbetomagus under influence from -ātus (suffix forming adjectives) + -ia (suffix forming place names), from a Gaulish name of uncertain origin but generally taken to refer to the Celtic god Borvo or to a river, spring, or other waters named for him + Proto-Celtic *magos (“field, plain”).
